Microdosing Mushroom Chocolate: Complete Guide

The mysterious world of magic mushrooms is starting to come into focus. These psychedelic fungi seem to be travelling down a similar path that another plant called cannabis travelled down for decades. These substances started as medicinal plants thousands of years ago and were used in ceremonial settings in dozens of cultures. Eventually, they became known as dangerous, recreational drugs and were cast aside as having no medicinal value. The cycle is coming full circle now as more people believe cannabis is beneficial for a multitude of reasons, and something similar is happening with magic mushrooms.

If you’re familiar with psychedelic mushrooms, you may imagine consuming them when they’re dry and raw and don’t taste very delectable at all. That’s not the case anymore. Although these aren’t technically legal or illegal, there are dozens of ways people now consume magic mushrooms, and many of those products lack that strong mushroom taste.

One way is through chocolate infused with the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms called psilocybin. When you consume psilocybin, your body converts that compound into psilocin, a compound very similar to serotonin. There are entire civilizations that believe combining that compound with the natural substances found in chocolate could open a door into a whole new world.

The good news is you can decide for yourself because there are hundreds of ways you can buy or make mushroom chocolate. It’s also becoming more common to see this treat come in the form of a microdose.

Microdosing

Microdosing is becoming somewhat mainstream in certain parts of the country, but there’s still so much to learn about how it works. What we do know is that microdosing is consuming a non-noticeable amount of a psychedelic substance, like psilocybin from magic mushrooms. Some people are given microdoses of magic mushrooms for medicinal purposes, although there are still tons of studies being conducted into their potential benefits to people.

Microdosing psilocybin has been studied by researchers at Johns Hopkins as an aid to help people to stop smoking. The Beckley Foundation has made the biggest push to get magic mushrooms to receive full legalization across Canada and the United States. They’ve presented dozens of studies and believe there are benefits to mushrooms in microdosing form.

Most people who take these for medicinal purposes are advised to only dose every three days, skipping two days between every dose. They’re told that if you’re tripping, then you’ve taken too much.

Mushroom Chocolate

The potential reason magic mushrooms and chocolate may work so well together dates back thousands of years when mushroom chocolate was used in ancient Aztec and Mayan ceremonies and rituals. Back then, they believed they could harness the power of the psychoactive compounds in magic mushrooms by adding them to a chocolate beverage.

Cacao or cocoa, which are the base ingredients in chocolate treats, is not a psychedelic. It does function as one through the psychoactive effect it can have on the brain. Research studies show a possible correlation between consuming chocolate at the same time as psilocybin and how that combination impacts the brain and possibly increases the effects.

Ancient peoples believed that when these two compounds were able to work together in the brain, the effects of both would be enhanced, providing even more spiritual and medical benefits. Several scientists are studying those belief systems. They are figuring out if microdoses of chocolate and magic mushrooms can truly provide benefits in the long term and, if so, for which patients. Some signs show they may act as MAO-inhibitors. That means they block the bad stuff that breaks down the good stuff in your brain like serotonin.

Putting It All Together

It’s becoming more common to see people infuse all types of foods with psilocybin. Magic mushroom chocolate is among the most popular treats available at dispensaries in this category, and it’s also easy to make at home. Dosing and microdosing are pretty easy to understand with these products because it’s straightforward. A standard dose of magic mushrooms is anything above .5 gram to 3 grams of the product.

When you consider microdosing, you’ll work down from that .5 gram mark.

This recipe only requires a few ingredients and items you probably already have in your kitchen. It’s perfect for making your microdose of mushroom chocolate.

Ingredients and Supplies

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Dried magic mushrooms, ground (1-3 grams)
  • Chocolate bar or chocolate chips (one bar or half a bag of chocolate chips)
  • Glass bowl
  • Candy or chocolate moulds

Grind up the mushrooms and break up the chocolate bar, and put them in a separate bowl. Melt the chocolate and then add the mushrooms and mix. Pour the mixture into moulds and let them cool in the fridge. About an hour later, you’ll have your finished microdose mushroom chocolate moulds.

For recipes like this, you’ll want to find the right magic mushroom product to use in the mix. Using dried mushrooms that are ground up will help make it easier to measure out the correct amount per dose. A microdose can go up to .5 gram, but starting at .10 gram is a safe levelling point. You can work your way up from there if the dose isn’t helping you reach your goal.

There are a few common strains of mushrooms. Some do contain a higher concentration of psilocybin than others, so know before you buy. Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe semilanceata are two different types of psilocybin in magic mushrooms. Those are also good strains to try with microdosing because they tend to have lower psilocybin levels than some others.

Closing Thoughts

Aside from chocolate mushroom microdoses, there are a number of other products available on the market designed for the same use. One of the more common products is microdose mushroom capsules, which are a common way for many people to ingest the psilocybin. So if you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, you can still find a microdose product that may work for you.
