How To Make Cannabis Gummies

Written and Fact Checked by S. Zulfiqar

When you think of edibles, gummies hold true to being the most popular and convenient way to consume weed. Coming in a variety of different sweet and sour flavours, cannabis gummies are discrete and require no additional materials in order to feel the warm and euphoric high effects.

Making your own cannabis gummies is a fun way to customize your edible experience as you can explore different strains, flavours and doses in each batch. In this article, learn the process of how to make the best homemade gummies, as well as what to expect when eating.

What are Cannabis Gummies?

Cannabis gummies have become a widely popular form of consumption due to their discrete presence, aroma and simple dosage. Packed with flavorful and potent cannabinoids, gummies, as well as other forms of cannabis edibles, can be a totally different experience compared to smoking.

When you consume cannabis gummies, the high affects your body differently than smoking would. Giving off more of a body high, cannabis gummies may have you feeling warm and tingly throughout your body, creating waves of euphoria and giddiness.

How To Make Cannabis Gummies

How are Cannabis Gummies Made?

THC and CBD are both fat soluble, which means both cannabinoids must be consumed in fat in order to metabolize and react to our body when ingested. A cannabis oil is often made using a fat soluble, such as oil or butter, in order to mix in with the edibles being made.

If you are making your edibles from flower, you will need to create a cannabis oil infusion before making the gummies.  Luckily, the process is two simple steps and allows you to dose and control the amount of weed you are infusing!

  • Decarboxylate Your Cannabis: The first and most important step of any sort of cannabis food infusion involves decarboxylating your weed. This process is done by activating the compounds in cannabis through heat, converting the THCA elements into THC, allowing you to get high when consumed. The key ingredient in this decarboxylation, (otherwise known as decarb) process is heat. Grind up the amount of weed you will use for your gummies and place it on a foil baking sheet in the oven for about 30-45 minutes at around 220-245°F. Keep an eye on this to make sure it doesn’t get too hot!
  • Mixing Solutions Together: Next, combine the decarbed cannabis into a melted cup of coconut oil (or any fat soluble of your choice). Place both contents in a saucepan that heats up to around 130-150°F. Adding in the grinded weed, continue simmering the mix together for an hour, stirring frequently.

After infusing your decarboxylated weed with coconut oil, you’re ready to make cannabis gummies!

What you’ll need:

  • ½ cup cannabis infused coconut oil
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 85 gram packet of flavored gelatine (standard small box of Jell-o)
  • 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatine
  • ½ teaspoon sunflower or soy lecithin

Instructions:

  1. Add water, cannabis infused coconut oil, sunflower/soy lecithin in the pot and place on the stove on low heat.
  2. Stir until the oil is completely melted and the mixture is consistent in texture. Add in the flavored and unflavored gelatine, stirring constantly.
  3. Keep on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the gelatine is dissolved, constantly whisk to make sure it does not come to a complete boil.
  4. Use a dropper to fill the gummy molds one by one, be quick so the liquid doesn’t cool and separate before you are finished!
  5. Once each gummy mold is full, put the gummies in the freezer for 20-25 minutes or until they have hardened.

Any gummies you save and choose to eat later are recommended to stay stored in the fridge to keep cool.

Eating Cannabis Gummies

One of the most common questions regarding eating cannabis gummies is how much you should eat. This answer depends on a variety of factors – your weed tolerance, experience with edibles, even the potency of the cannabis infused. Even so, it’s important to remember our bodies break down cannabis edibles differently than it would smoking cannabis, so it is suggested to start with a low dose and see how it effects you.

It’s even a smart idea to be cautious and try a half, or even a quarter, of a gummy first to get a good sense of how strong your first batch is. Consider the cannabis you used to make your cannabis oil, or check the label on the oil you are using, to determine potency. For instance, if you used 3.5 grams of cannabis that has around 20% THC, each teaspoon of oil may contain around 14 mg of THC.

Medical Uses and Safety with Cannabis Gummies

Cannabis gummies have become a great option for people looking to enjoy a cannabis experience without the act of inhaling or smoking. Many medical patients prefer cannabis gummies because of its low risk to lung damage or other medical conditions compared to smoking or vaping. Edibles infused with cannabis can be consumed discretely and often leave no strong aroma or aftertaste.

When cannabis gummies are consumed, the cannabinoids and psychoactive compounds are absorbed in our liver and bloodstream quicker, compared to inhaling. Because of this, edibles can take anywhere from 30 minutes or up to an hour and a half for effects to kick in. Some people may have a slower metabolism or maybe you took the gummy on a full stomach – no matter what, patience is key. Start your edible experience with a comfortably cautious amount, be patient and wait before choosing to take more.

As appetizing as your cannabis gummies will look, be sure to keep them safely stored and out of reach from children.

Final Thoughts

Bursting with flavor and rich in potency, cannabis gummies have become a favoured method of consumption by many. With the variety of different gummies ranging on the market, making your own cannabis gummies is a fun alternative to enjoying this adult bite-sized treat.
